Will tangible media be extinct?

November 19, 2008

I sometimes read Steve Rubel’s blog Micro Persuasion. In a recent post Steve contended that, “by January 2014 I will wager that in the US almost all forms of tangible media will either be in sharp decline or completely extinct. I am not just talking about print, but all tangible forms of media – newspapers, magazines, books, DVDs, boxed software and video games.”

He followed up his bold claim with several links to media companies efforts to move away from tangible media. While I would not be so bold to put a date on it, I tend to agree that tangible media forms will be greatly reduced in the next decade, for good reason.

He describes in an earlier post ways to go “media green” and help the environment by moving away from paper forms to digital forms of media. I like the way Steve is thinking, but apparently many people disagree… most people who have taken the online poll on his blog have voted, “you’re crazy”!!

What do you think?

Windows users… it’s time for a change.

December 7, 2007

I am not trying to be pushy or condescending… but if you are still using a Windows based computer (and you have a choice in the matter) it is time for you to make a change. Life is better on the Mac side, trust me. I bristle a little at people getting macs “to look cool” or because it is trendy. Get one because you want a better experience and it will help you be more creative and productive.

If you need more information, read this article from USA today. It is honest and helpful to those considering making the switch. It does not paint Macs to be perfect (which they are not), but it identifies the differences and why people choose Mac.

I appreciate this analogy from the article, which I think sums up the article well, “Windows users tolerate their computers to get stuff done. The Mac crowd enjoys its machines…” True that.

The First Pod Hatched Not Long Ago…

Apple released the original iPod six years ago on October 23, 2001.
They grow up so fast… snif.

Only six years to conquer to world. Not bad.

I know the iPhone has been out for a while… but I still cannot contain myself… iLove it!! No, I do not have one yet… but I am scheming and planning a way to get one…

When I see someone that has one, I just want to play with it. I am not a blind follower of Mr. Jobs and Apple, but pretty close. I have had an Apple computer in my house since before there were Macs…

The iPhone just seems like a great gadget to have while traveling (which I am doing a bunch these days). My only complaint from testing one is that the virtual keyboard seems a little small to use with my fat thumbs. It seems like you really need to learn to type with your index fingers to be effective with it. If you have one, chime in!

I have a samsung blackjack which is a pretty good design. I love the keyboard on it and the small size, but that is where the love stops. It runs the dreadfully clumsy Windows Mobile 5, and the battery life is dismal.

Needless to say, I have iFroth… maybe I should start a blog or support group with that name for people who really want an iPhone or other Apple products, but can’t scrape together the cash.

Tomorrow I am going to look in our basement for stuff to sell on eBay.
